The Hunting Area
Wild reindeer move quickly according to weather, wind and feeding conditions. We therefore have access to several hunting areas and cabins around Forollhogna, allowing us to adapt to where the herd is located.
Transport by vehicle to the most suitable starting point for the day’s hunt, as well as between different hunting areas, is included. Our goal is to spend as much time as possible hunting rather than driving.
The Hunting Days
Each day is planned according to the latest observations of the herd, weather conditions and wind direction.
An experienced hunting guide accompanies you 1:1 throughout the hunt and uses local knowledge of the terrain and the reindeer’s movements to create the best possible hunting opportunities.
Hunting days can be long and may involve several hours of hiking in mountain terrain. Additional hunting days can be added on request.
Choice of Animal
You can choose to hunt:
- Mature bull
- Young bull
- Cow
- Calf
There is no trophy fee, regardless of the size of the animal taken.
Retrieving the Meat
Once an animal has been taken, another important part of the wild reindeer hunt begins.
Traditionally, the meat is carried out of the mountains by the hunter and guide – just as generations of Norwegian hunters have done before. For many, this is an important part of the complete hunting experience.
For an even more traditional ending to the hunt, packhorse retrieval can be arranged as an optional extra. A horse carrying the carefully packed meat out through the mountains creates a memorable and authentic conclusion to the hunt.
Accommodation
During the hunt, we stay in traditional mountain cabins in or close to the hunting area.
We have access to several cabins around Forollhogna and aim to stay as close as possible to where the reindeer are located. If the herd moves, we can change accommodation rather than lose valuable hunting time on long drives.
The standard is simple and comfortable, with the emphasis on an authentic Norwegian mountain hunting experience rather than luxury.
Food
All meals are included.
After long days in the mountains, we serve traditional Norwegian food based on local ingredients. Breakfast and food for the hunting day are adapted to the day’s plan.
Physical Requirements
You should be in reasonably good physical condition and comfortable walking in uneven mountain terrain.
Wild reindeer hunting takes place on foot, and some days may involve long distances, elevation changes and carrying equipment and meat.
The better prepared you are physically, the more flexibility we have to follow the reindeer and take advantage of opportunities as they arise.
